Have you ever been in a situation when you can't remember a rarely used but important password? Well, I was... It was quite a long vacation, and when I got back I absolutely forgot password from an important email account. I didn't access it very often and last time was a month before the vacation. I never thought that I can find myself in such a situation, that I never shown any prudence to story my passwords in a secure place. Fortunately, I specified correct answer to the secure question during registration of this account, so I was able to restore my password quite quickly.
To make sure it doesn't happen again I started to store all my more or less important passwords in a spreadsheet. This solution worked but was too far from the right one.
Luckily there are special password managers available that provide great help with dealing with passwords.
KeePass is one of the best programs for password management, and taking into account that it's free it became my favorite password manager. KeePass allows its users to not only store password in a convenient way but also provides a great number of extra features.
You can store your passwords in groups for easy access, and even if you need to store lots of passwords and you need more sophisticated structure than a few groups, KeePass allows creating as many subgroups as you want and have them organized hierarchically. You don't need to worry that such a complicated organization will compromise password lookup time - search function will bring needed password to you in a few moments.
Additionally, you can import and export passwords database from/to various formats, use built-in password generator to generate passwords of any complexity, use auto-type feature and quickly copy passwords to the clipboard. KeePass doesn't need to be installed and can be run from any place, including USB key, which is extremely useful if you use the same accounts from your home and office computers.
On top of all of this KeePass features can be extended with great number of plugins for various needs.

KeePass is a free, open source, light-weight and easy-to-use password manager for Windows and mobile devices. You can store your passwords in highly-encrypted databases, which can only be unlocked with one master password and/or a key file.
A database consists of only one file that can be transferred from one computer to another easily. The program supports password groups, in which you can sort your passwords into.
You can drag-n-drop passwords into almost any other window. The auto-type feature types your login information into other windows automatically (just press a hot key). Fast copying passwords or user names to the Windows clipboard is possible by just double-clicking on the specific field in the password list.
KeePass can import data from various formats like CSV, CodeWallet TXT and CounterPanes PwSafe. The password list can be exported to various formats (including TXT, HTML, XML and CSV files). The password list can of course also be printed (complete database or only current view).
Searching and sorting the password database is possible.
KeePass ships with a strong random password generator (you can define the possible output characters, length, etc.).
The program can be translated into other languages very easily (over 34 languages are available). It has a plugin framework; many plugins provide additional functionality like backup features, network features, ...; they are available from the KeePass website.
